MintLife lists eight unexpected ways to generate extra cash as follows: Throw a Gold Party Have a Yard Sale Try Virtual Yard-Selling Write Reviews Online Become a Blogger Start a Change Jar Utilize Skills (consider getting a part-time job) Get a Rewards Credit Card — And Use It Responsibly Here’s my take on these: 1. I’m not sure about the gold party concept. Seems like you’d probably get a lot less than what the gold was worth. Then again, I don’t know where you’d get more. Anyone have experience with gold parties or with selling gold jewelry? 2. A yard sale is not an option for me anytime soon (ever been to Michigan in winter)? 3. That said, I do like the idea of selling stuff you don’t use . It can make you money (which is obvious), potentially save you money (if you can clear out an off-site storage facility you’ve been renting), and de-clutter your home/life. What’s not to love? 4. Really? You can make money writing reviews online? 5. Blogging is not the no-brainer side gig that it once was. In fact, if you’re doing it to make money, you probably want to try something else first — I’m sure it will be more fruitful. IMO if you start blogging in 2011 you’d be better served to focus on a blog that benefits your career (like writing on your profession or industry) than any other type of blog (like a hobby one.) 6. You’re not really “making” money with a change jar, but it can be a good “trick” to accumulate a good amount that might get lost otherwise. 7. Ugh. Part-time job. They’re killing me! Then again, if you’re deep in debt and fighting your way out, this could be your best option for finding extra money quickly. 8. Yes! I prefer cash back credit cards, use them only on budgeted expenses, and pay them off every month. I made over $800 last year using them!
